The Unknown
In the film Lon played a circus performer named Alonzo, who wears a tightly laced straitjacket to conceal his arms so he can pose as an armless knife thrower in a Spanish circus. His apparent deformity prevents the police, who are searching for acriminal with two thumbs on one hand, from giving him a second glace. (Alonzo, of course, is that criminal.) Alonzo secretly loves the circus owner's daug...mehrhter Janon, who has a phobia about men's arms around her. Alonzo believes she can never truly love him as long as he has arms, so he has a doctor aputate them, only to find Nanon has overcome her fear of men's arms and has fallen for thea circus strongman, Malabar. The strongman has a new act in which he uses his arms to hold back two horses on tredmills, pulling in opposite directions. Janon tells Alonzo her fear that if one of the treadmills were to stop, Malabar's arms would be torn from his body. This gives Alonzo an idea for revenge. During a performance, Alonzo engages the brake on one of the treadmills, causing one of the horses to rear up and jerk Malabar's arm. Trying to help, Nanon darts into the path of the horse. Alonzo, fearing for her safety, runs up and pushes her out of the way, but is tzruck by the hoofs of the horse and killed. >A fine sinister plot, alot of macabre thrills and great acting by Lon Chaney.
